Book Description:
Migraine: Manifestations, Pathophysiology, and Management, Second Edition, is a much expanded, updated monograph that focuses in detail on migraine's diverse variations, its pathophysiology, and its treatment. Authored by a clinician/scientist who himself suffers from migraine, the book's premise is that the clinical significance of migraine and its treatment are intelligible only if the physician understands the anatomical, physiological, and pharmacological factors underlying both head pain and the other manifestations of migraine. The book provides clear clinical descriptions of the myriad of specific migraine syndromes, and discusses the rationale for, and elements of, a sensitive, inclusive patient history. Also covered are important but sometimes ignored topics such as environmental triggering of migraine and myofascial syndromes. The Second Edition also bridges the gap between basic science and clinical practice by explaining those substantive advances made in understanding fundamental mechanisms of head pain and aura. Recent knowledge about genetics, hormonal changes, cerebral circulation, nitric oxide, peptides, central sensitization of trigeminal neurons, and the role of periaqueductal gray matter buttress the discussion of basic mechanisms. On the treatment side, the Second Edition reflects the impressive advances in pharmacological approaches to migraine. There is a greatly expanded section on the triptans and their mechanisms of action, and rationales and practical information about the use of all other viable anti-migraine and prophylactic drugs. Psychobiological aspects of stress and stress management, elimination of environmental stimuli, the educational facets of management, and aspects of the patient/physician interaction so crucial in the treatment of migraine are all discussed. Special problems associated with the care of women, children, the elderly, patients with intractable headaches, and emergency department patients are thoroughly reviewed. In sum, this scholarly, well-referenced book offers in one volume a comprehensive scientific and clinical discussion of migraine headache.

From Basic Pain Mechanisms to Headache (Frontiers in Headache Research)
By Jes Olesen, Troels Jensen
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Number Of Pages: 288
Publication Date: 2006-03-30
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0198569815
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780198569817
Binding: Hardcover
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Book Description:
Though the topics of 'pain' and 'headache' are obviously linked, these two research fields have in recent years developed at their own pace, often with scant attention paid to the other. By forging closer links between these fields, it should be possible to develop a deeper understanding of both the pain mechanisms associated with headache and a deeper understanding of pain itself. This book brings together researchers and clinicians from the forefront of these two disciplines to explore how the basic pain mechanisms relate to migraine and other forms of headache. With cutting edge research from the frontiers of headache and pain research, the book will be essential for clinicians treating headache sufferers, providing answers to many of the commonly asked questions about the mechanisms of their headache. It will also be of interest to those pain researchers dealing with mechanisms related to headache and migraine.

Calcium Signalling and Disease: Molecular pathology of calcium (Subcellular Biochemistry)
By Ernesto Carafoli, Marisa Brini
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Publisher: Springer
Number Of Pages: 596
Publication Date: 2007-12-06
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1402061900
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781402061905
Binding: Hardcover
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Book Description:
This topic is a new entry in the area of cellular calcium signaling: yet, it now spans the entire area, with discoveries that cover both genetic and acquired pathologies, even offering glimpses in the direction of therapy.
Cellular calcium homeostasis, and thus calcium signalling, is mainly regulated by membrane intrinsic proteins and calcium sensor proteins. Both classes may be involved in pathological processes that affect both human and animals, ranging from common and important diseases (e.g. migraine, diabetes, epilepsia, manic depression, infertility, various types of cancer, Alzheimers disease, muscular dystrophy) to rare genetic conditions (e.g., a number of genetic heart conditions, autoimmune retinopathies, night blindness, hereditary amyloid polyneuropathy, malignant hyperthermia, cerebellar ataxia, atherothrombotic disease).
Clearly, the topic has now become not only very large, but also very stimulating. Its extensive critical coverage is likely to eventually stimulate fruitful interdisciplinary discussions.

A Compendium of Neuropsychological Tests: Administration, Norms, and CommentaryBy Otfried Spreen, Esther Strauss
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Number Of Pages: 752
Publication Date: 1998-02-19
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0195100190
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780195100198
Binding: Hardcover
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Book Description:
The Second Edition of this well-known Compendium has been considerably expanded and updated. It contains new chapters on test selection administration and preparation of the client; report writing and the informing interview; executive functions; occupational interest and aptitude; and malingering and symptom validity testing. The first four chapters focus on history taking, test selection, profiling of test results, report writing, and informing the client. The remaining thirteen chapters contain nearly all the tests covered in the first edition plus almost the same number of new ones. Some of the new tests are: Kaufman-Brief Intelligence Test, Mini-Mental State Examination, Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, Design Fluency Test, California Verbal Learning Test, and Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Test. For each test, the authors provide a thorough description, source and price, instructions for administration, duration, scoring procedures, normative data, and validity information. They also discuss special tests and clinical techniques in examining the functional integrity of brain regions. The volume does not limit itself to the adult age range, but includes all the norms available for pediatric and gerontological populations, as well as neuropsychological tests developed specifically for children.

Microcircuits: The Interface between Neurons and Global Brain Function (Dahlem Workshop Reports)By Sten Grillner, Ann M. Graybiel
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Publisher: The MIT Press
Number Of Pages: 472
Publication Date: 2006-08-11
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0262072785
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780262072786
Binding: Hardcover
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Book Description:
Microcircuits, functional modules that act as elementary processing units bridging single cells to systems and behavior, could provide the link between neurons and global brain function. Microcircuits are designed to serve particular functions; examples of these functional modules include the cortical columns in sensory cortici, glomeruli in the olfactory systems of insects and vertebrates, and networks generating different aspects of motor behavior. In this Dahlem Workshop volume, leading neuroscientists discuss how microcircuits work to bridge the single cell and systems levels and compare the intrinsic function of microcircuits with their ion channel subtypes, connectivity, and receptors, in order to understand the design principles and function of the microcircuits.
The chapters cover the four major areas of microcircuit research: motor systems, including locomotion, respiration, and the saccadic eye movements; the striatum, the largest input station of the basal ganglia; olfactory systems and the neural organization of the glomeruli; and the neocortex. Each chapter is followed by a group report, a collaborative discussion among senior scientists.
